THE ARTIST RODRIGO CASSOU
(MEXICO CITY, NOVEMBER 1979)
Rodrigo expresses himself through his lens, capturing magical moments during his extensive walks through the cities and places he explores. The colors, smells, lights, and textures of Mexican motifs are the brushes he uses to paint his pictures.
Conversations with the people he meets inspire him, resulting in a story behind each portrait and an adventure behind each landscape.
Born in Veracruz, Mexico, Cassou grew up in the heart of Coyoacán, in a photographer’s environment.
His mother, who worked for Getty Images for over 20 years, married a renowned advertising and commercial photographer, who had been part of Rodrigo’s family since he was just four years old.
From an early age, he found in art the means to express his most intimate feelings. After years of studying advertising in Mexico City, he enrolled in the Hallmark Institute of Photography in New England, Massachusetts, focusing his work on portraits, advertising, commercial and editorial photography.
His photos have been featured in magazines such as Harpers Bazaar, Esquire, Life and Style, Deep, Revolution, Dónde Ir, Motociclismo, and Caras. He has also worked for advertising brands like McCann Erickson, Walter Thompson, Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi, Vale Euro RSCG, Leo Burnett, and several other renowned agencies.
Over the years, his wide range of professional experiences has specialized his work in various areas, including product shots, editorials, aerial photography, portraits, weddings, architecture, and food photography.
His current work focuses on the beauty and simplicity of landscapes, as well as street photography. He has passionately documented Mexican social events, such as the commemorative march for the 50 years since the students were killed in 1968, the major earthquake of 2017, and traditional Mexican religious events including the “Santa Muerte” celebration in Tepito, and the pilgrimage to the city celebrated every year to honor the “Virgen de Guadalupe” day. In his images, he conveys his perception of reality and people, constantly striving to capture the perfect balance, composition, and color.
